Coming at it from the other end of the spectrum, I agree with you about the religious imagery. Provided it's not rammed down my throat, it's fine, and actually, I rather like the reference points it can provide. And ITA that the story is about the power of people and the power of thought (although I suppose there are some that would argue that prayer is the same thing...)
To be so lonely it grieves you that your emeny will die in your arms rather than live.
It's utterly heartbreaking. And both the performances there are pitch perfect.
