Yes, that's it exactly. And regardless of whether you like Rusty's way of character depiction or not - the fact is that it's very skillful. Is in manipulative? Of course it is - but that's the way it's done in visual media, isn't it? Time is short and the audience needs to be able to latch on to these people while the story progreses.

*nods* There are definite comparisons to be drawn, not least that ACC was also designed to be a fun "romp" fit for Christmas Day viewing.
As you and others have said here - the plot makes sense and the characterisation of the Doctor is consistent. And both those things count for a lot.
