Does anyone in the UK actually take Eurovision seriously? I mean, we all watch it to take the piss, don't we?

The thing is, it doesn't even fall into the category of something that's so bad, it's good. It's just... BAD.

I know this is said year after year, but we all know damn well this isn't a song contest. And even if it were, how can you possibly make any value judgements about songs that come from such musically disparate places? Apples and Oranges.

I think they should bring back Sir Tel. At least he was intentionally funny!

I thought the point of Eurovision was to take the piss ;D

Didn't ABBA win a Eurovision contest once upon a time?

::hee:: It's cheesy, cheesy fun. I just love the disparity between the purely comedic acts and the serious vocal performances -- and you never quite know who's going to win :D But it should definitely be watched with a glass of wine in hand!

My kids love it, they ask all their friends around and camp it up, sometimes in national dress. It's a highlight ofvtheir socal calender and really quite sweet. There are 15 teenagers in our living room at the moment.

I love the cheese. I really do. One of my students just came in to the apt while I was watching, and trying to explain it to an American student who's never heard of it? DEFINITELY interesting.

Of course he came in during Germany's song, and was even MORE confused by the oddly dressed backup dancers lol.

I mean, we all watch it

Ummm, no! Even before I stopped having a licence, I hadn't watched it for more than 20 years. Not just because the songs are unbelievably crap - Europop is such a terrible advert for music as an artform - but because it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the songs are any good or not. Countries swap votes between themselves to the extent you can more or less predict 70% of the voting. Where's the contest in that?

Even if the only reason to watch it is to take the piss out of whacky forriners, we're just conforming to stereotype. We take the piss out of them and they hate us for never bothering to learn their languages and sending our drunken teenagers to puke on their beaches.

I have another flister who talks about Eurovision all the time and I have no idea what she's talking about. Enlighten an ignorant colonist?

I think it is an excuse to have a party, get drunk, and take the piss. I haven't watched regularly (only when I had no other plans) but when I do I'm certainly taking a lot of wine with it!

Having said that, my impression is that the UK are taking it more seriously than the Germans and Swedes
