Hot... or not?

Last night, my fellow DFGs and I embarked upon a very serious discussion as to the hotness - or otherwise - of a number of the objects of our fangirl affections.

And by serious, I mean we threw an obscene amount of pretty around teh interwebz!

Needless to say, there was some agreement and some discord, mostly about the fact that Fenny and I are rather 'meh' about Nathan Fillon - but it just goes to show how true the old adage is. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

It also gives me the excuse to post pictures of a stupendous amount of pretty and hotness.

And, you know, some other blokes who aren't David Tennant.

I know teh interwebz is full of it, but I couldn't let today pass without saying how sad I was to hear of the death of Michael Jackson.

I know that his life - especially in the last couple of decades - was more renouned for its weirdness than for his music-making. I was working for Sony when the child abuse scandal was at its height and I remember the time he turned up at our offices - I've never seen so many blacked-out limos, SUVs and HUGE men dressed in black wearing cool shades!

He was obviously a very troubled individual. A worldwide superstar from a very young age, he lived almost the whole of his life in the public eye - not easy for anyone.

That said - I want to remember his incredible talent. As a performer, I think he was second to none. Reports are saying that he was the most important musical talent since Elvis, and I'm inclined to agree.

His music speaks for itself.

RIP.

The good and the not so good...

No, I'm not overly impressed with the casting news for the next series of Doctor Who.

So instead, I'll concentrate on the happier news that David Tennant is going to film Hamlet for BBC 2, and that the whole cast of the Stratford production is also on board - which included Patrick Stewart as Claudius.

Now, there's news that deserves a self-satisfied "whoop!".

A fond farewell

I just watched the final ever episode of ER and I have to say that I think it was a pretty damn good way to end it after fifteen years. I know those of us who are WW fans have had our moans about John Wells in the past, but I have to give him credit for this one - he got it absolutely right IMO.

There was a decent balance between the old and newer characters - and I really think that if there'd ever been a spin-off, it should have been the Carter & Benton show, because the chemistry between those two was awesome to the end.

Rachel Greene turning up to carry on the family tradition was a lovely touch, as was the little throwback to the very first episode, with Lydia waking Morris.

I liked the way that, although this was a final episode, normal service wasn't suspended; there were deaths, tragedies - and we were shown that life goes on at County.

And it was nice to see the opening credits back one last time.

I watched ER for eleven years and never missed an episode, but after Carter left, I never really managed to get back into it and my watching over the last few years was sporadic to say the least. But the early years in particular provided some of the best and most innovative telly I've seen, and I'll remember the show very, very fondly.

I can't believe I'm doing this... Mr Caz was poking around on You Tube earlier and stumbled across this -

I was sceptical to say the least, I mean, come on - one man and his ukelele? But this guy is amazing - give it a listen. I've never heard anything like it! In a good way :)

Swine flu has reached my neck of the woods.

We're at stage 5 (of 6) on the WHO's pandemic scale, but so far, cases are relatively few and are mild - the guy mentioned in that article is at home. I also have to say that I think the media is - for once - actively helping the situation by not spreading doom, gloom and panic.

In our favour right now is the fact that we're moving out of our main flu season, although some are saying that that's a false optimism, because all it means is that we'll be hit by it later in the year.

Note to self - get a flu jab this year!

Over the last couple of days, I've watched the six half-hour episodes of The Thick of It, which were broadcast in 2005 and 2007 and... wow.

The show is about a fictional government ministry and the dealings of the minister with the PM's chief spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker (obviously modelled on Alastair Campbell). It's a much harder-hitting version of Yes Minister although the set up is very similar in many ways - it's black, black, black comedy, if comedy is even an adequate term - more like bite you in the arse satire because it presents a picture of government that so many of us believe to be true.

I saw Richard Schiff interviewed on Sky News last week - he's over here filming - and the interviewer mentioned that he should check out this show. It's not in the least like WW - the characters in it are all pretty unlikeable - but I guess it's how us Brits like our political fiction; nasty!

I can't remember how or why I didn't catch the show first time around - it's the sort of thing I'd usually make an appointment with, but if you've never seen it and you like your satire on the sharp side of "biting", then do check it out.

Peter Capaldi as Tucker is quite simply awesome - and it's reminded me that I really wanted to see In the Loop as well, if it's still on anywhere around here!

I’ve not been about much lately – I’m really tired, and all the stuff that’s going on with my job at the moment is stressing me out to the extent that it’s practically the only thing on my mind right now.

That said though, being so bloody tired has meant that rather than working (much) the last couple of evenings, I’ve managed to catch up with some of the shows I’ve been watching.

I’m compiling a list of shows to catch up on when the ones I’m watching currently go off air. I have the second half of season 2 of Life to watch. I’m really sad that isn’t being renewed, because it’s a great show. A cop show, yes, but Damian Lewis is fabulous in it, and the writing is excellent. I was thinking I might try Mad Men again and maybe Reaper (which I know has been canned, but I can manage to find time to watch 2 seasons of something!) Lie to Me with Tim Roth is starting here next week, so I might give that another go as well. Oh, and a lot of people here rave about Chuck so maybe I’ll try that. Or is there anything else out there you think is more worthy of my attention ;-)

Remember how, when we had a bit of bad weather here at the beginning of the year, I was saying how the kids at school were moaning because the school wasn't closed?

What are they moaning about now?

Yeah, you guessed it. They're moaning because the school isn't closed due to the Swine Flu.
