You have to admire their ingenuity. If nothing else.

I spoke to a colleague about an hour ago who's at school, and she told me that although the place is open, there are quite a few staff who couldn't make it in. That's okay though, because only about half the kids are in. Somebody phoned the local radio station and told them the school was closed!

Oh that's just wonderful! How very ingenious.

Somehow, I don't think that ingenious would be the adjective being bandied about the school!

Or the radio station. I'm more bothered about the fact that they listen to just anyone who rings in. Don't these things have to come from the council or the head, or, you know, somebody with some kind of authority? A bit like IRA bombers giving a code word.

Quite. And I was only reading the day before on the BBC Essex website how they had to have an actual conversation (no phone messages or emails) and that they'd ask for the DFE number. I can only assume that whichever station was getting so many calls that they forgot to ask!

I have to say I like the way the college does it. There's a message on the website as soon as possible after 6am to say if the college is closed or any of the buses are not running. It's not like I don't check my laptop the minute I wake up anyway, so I know whether I can go back to sleep or just swear a lot!
