DW Rewatch - 4x04, The Sontaran Stratagem
In The Sontaran Stratagem and The Poison Sky we’re back on Earth for a fairly straightforward “Aliens want to take over the Earth” story. It’s a much better story than last year’s early season two-parter (yes, I still can’t forgive them for the hybrid-mutant-pig-dalek-slaves!) and I’m rather fond of it for the following reasons:
No hybrid-mutant-pig-dalek-slaves
The return of Martha
The return of Wilf
The return of an old adversary (I'm always a sucker for the 'old' baddies when they come back!)
And last, but by no means least - David Tennant is ridiculously pretty.
I was going to post one entry for both episodes, but ... um... yeah.
I like the idea of the ATMOS being a threat because it’s one of those things that’s not so far removed from reality as to be totally implausible. So many people these days have Sat Navs that it’s not a difficult leap to believe that someone somewhere could, at some point, market one that isn’t everything it seems!
I make absolutely no apologies for the fact that I'm unashamedly using this as an excuse to post pretty pictures of my favourite bits. I'm also having a crappy week and I find that staring at a gorgeous man helps to take my mind off it a bit!

I can’t believe I’m doing this!
No, neither can I.
It’s the first time in Nu-Who (I think) that a companion has flown rather than helped to fly the TARDIS, I think. Not sure about Classic!Who though…

Before Donna can put a dent in the 1980s - You’ve got a mobile? Since when?
When you think about it, it is rather odd that he doesn't have one of his own! He usually has to borrow one.

We’re in your area and wondered if you’d be interested in having your drive resurfaced...

He expects handbags at dawn over him. Well, given what happened when Rose met Sarah-Jane, it’s probably a reasonable expectation.

Donna can’t be doing with any of that

But when the girl-talk starts, he’d rather they were fighting

The serious face is hot.

Is that what you did to her, turned her into a soldier?
Hm. Martha’s not the only one that seems to have happened to over the years…

No salutes

Heh. I’ll have a salute.

I’ll have one of those :-)

Plotty stuff about people dying in their cars

Is it alien?

Who you gonna call?

Oh, right. Me. Yes. Good.

I don't like people with guns hanging around me, all right?

MARTHA
If anyone got me used to fighting, it's you.
DOCTOR
Oh right, so it's my fault.
Well, kind of. All the Doctor’s companions and many of the other people he meets on his travels end up fighting one way or another, don’t they? They fight with him, they fight for him… some of them die for him.
It's all right for you. You can just come and go, but some of us have got to stay behind. So I've got to work from the inside and by staying inside, maybe I stand a chance of making them better.

*drool*
I love that little chat. Martha’s definitely moved on from her infatuation or whatever it was enough to challenge the Doctor like that. In S3, she was incredibly loyal, capable and totally deserving of the huge amount of trust he put in her from the get go - but here the rose-tinted glasses are off. It’s a bit more like the way Donna sees him, I suppose – she loves him, but she’s not blinded by it.

Oi, you lot! All your storm troopers and your sonics -- rubbish! Shoulda come with me.
Never one to mince her words

Where have you been?

She’s been being awesome, that’s where she’s been.

Not one hangover, man flu, sneaky little shopping trip. Nothing. Not ever. They don't get ill.

I can see why he likes you.

(thanks to
dana_cz for that cap. Otherwise known as “the smirk that can slay fangirls at fifty paces.”)

Time to visit the school for geniuses. Or genii?

A lovely little scene between Martha and Donna. 'Cause you know the Doctor, he's wonderful, he's brilliant, but he's like fire -- stand too close and people get burned.
Oh, how right she is. But people can’t help themselves – continuing the fire analogy, they’re drawn to him like moths to a flame, which isn’t his fault; it’s who and what he is. And that applies, whatever incarnation of the Doctor we’re talking about.

I like the way the Doctor’s dislike of all things military is shown to be just the slightest bit hypocritical. You have weapons, but you choose to keep them hidden.
Oh, he’s got weapons alright. But not the sort that he’s talking about! *g*

She knows he’s like a kid in a sweet shop when he’s fired up about something, but she can’t resist yanking his chain (!)

Aww – his face. It’s a bit… soon

But he’s going to take it like a man. Or Time Lord.

Time for the thank you and farewell speech. Is that a pout? Yep.

Er… hang on a mo.

You’re just popping home for a visit, that’s what you mean

You dumbo

Do you know what you are? A great, big, outer-space dunce.

Yeah
While I love that because they’re just so bloody fantastic together… I can’t help but feel Donna was being just the teeniest little bit mean there. I mean, sure, he needs bringing into line sometimes, but what’s he done wrong this time?
While Martha’s examining the workforce and on her way to getting cloned, the Doctor drops Donna off at home.

Catherine Tate is wonderful here. She doesn’t say anything, but you can tell what’s going through her mind, even before the flashbacks of her travels with the Doctor so far. One of the excellent additions to Nu-Who has been the families of the companions which I don’t think we’d ever seen before. The companions have given up whatever they’ve had at home to go travelling the universe. While I can understand the attraction, nowadays, we’re shown the price that they have to pay; that they go without seeing their family for long stretches of time (well they’re long stretches for them because of the timey-wimey – remember, Martha had only been away for a couple of days “Earth time” in The Sound of Drums.)
I don’t think it’s necessarily that Donna’s having second thoughts, despite her comment in Planet of the Ood about going home. I see that as a natural “wobble” – even though this is what Donna has been searching for, she finds herself on an alien world dealing with something that’s all too human and familiar and horrible - and her knee-jerk reaction is to want to run away from it. I think Donna knows her own mind, but she wouldn’t be her if she didn’t feel her links to her family strongly, especially when she’s returning to them after a period of absence. I think she’s comparing her life there to her new life with the Doctor, and while she obviously loves her family, she needs to be with him more.

And what’s so wonderful, is that Wilf understands that.

This Doctor, are you safe with him?

He's amazing, Gramps. He's just... dazzling. And never tell him I said that.
Awww.

Ooh! Shiny stuff!

Anyone would think they were planning to leave the planet

Rattigan might be a genius, but he’s crap at grammar

Unf.

It’s not easy, being clever. Well… he should know.

Oh, it’s a thing

And now, it’s an army of Humpty-Dumpties!

Anyone for tennis?
The Doctor and Ross leg it. I’ve put this next cap in simply because of the interesting snippet of information that accompanies it –

Legend says he led the battle in the last great Time War.
We’ve heard about the Time War. We know the Doctor fought and we know that he was the only one who could end it. But that he led the battle? I can understand why he’s never said that – wiping out two entire races can’t have been a pleasant experience. But it’s also another of those examples of how he isn’t always the most reliable source of information; not because he lies, but because he doesn’t say. (I'm thinking specifically of his lies of omission in Gridlock, and then what he says about the way he's chosen to remember the Time Lords in The End of Time.) We’ve all got some form of selective memory – and the Doctor is no exception.

Speeding away, the Doctor has to use reverse psychology on a CAR!!

A whimper rather than a bang…

Hi, Honey. I’m home!

You won’t believe the day I’m having. Oh. Wait. He actually says that! *g*

It’s you!

Mouth

The thing is, Doctor, that Donna is my only grandchild. You gotta promise me you're gonna take care of her.

She takes care of me! Love the way he says that.

Aww. The men in her life are bonding.

What sort of Doctor blows up cars?

Er This sort.

CLIFFHANGER! There's an Evil!Martha clone on the loose, the Sontarans have activated the ATMOS gas and Wilf's stuck in the car. Eeek!

I've got loads of fic snippets (well, loads for me - I'm the sort of person who has NO ideas, and then three come along at once!) sitting around that I need to find time to finish, so good luck :-)

As for another companion driving the TARDIS, I believe Tegan did a short hop during Five's era. Don't remember any others offhand.

I recentlty suggested to someone on my flist that they make a picspam of "come-hither" looks. Of course, I may not live to tell the tale, but what a way to go!
I'm working on the next one now - hopefully it'll be up tomorrow.

LOL
Absolutely.

Looking forward to the picspam and excellent commentary. ;)

One little quote I'd like to muse on: I like the way the Doctor’s dislike of all things military is shown to be just the slightest bit hypocritical (when Mace remarks about him having "weapons" but keeping them hidden).
I didn't really hear that particular line as justifiably pointing out hypocrisy on the Doctor's part. IMO, Mace was stung by the Doctor's comment earlier about guns, and he was trying to bring the Doctor down to his level by stretching the definition of "weapon" to mean "anything tactically useful", when the Doctor had only been specifically referring to "things meant to be used to physically hurt or kill other beings".
Not that the Doctor is never hypocritical, of course, but in this case I thought Mace was being a bit unfair.
Loving the spams! :-)
no subject
Also, it's pretty clear that Mace is a bit of a Doctor fanboy so I can see he'd be a bit put out by the Doctor's dislike of gune and his disregard for military authority :-)
no subject
But I do think that though their method was flawed, there was something valid in what both were saying. I wouldn't call the Doctor a "soldier", as Jenny did, but he *is* a warrior, in a metaphorical sort of way.
