The Obscene Amount of Pretty Picspam

It occurred to me a while ago that I may just be in the slightest bit of a rut when it comes to my fangirling choices. I tend to go for the “not-conventionally-handsome but hot-as-hell” types, which is nothing to complain about – but I worry about these things, so I thought that, in the interests of clarity, and of making sure that my choices are valid, I should attempt to make a serious study of said not-conventionally-handsome-but-hot-as-hell types.

Just for my own peace of mind, you understand.

Then, on hearing that two of my dearest friends have been having rather a crappy time of it lately, I thought – what better way to help cheer them up than by doing a picspam of obscene amounts of prettiness!

So I made a list, drew an organisational chart with arrows and everything - and drew a venn diagram. Because I’m a geek scientific like that. And – what a surprise! – look what happened. *g*

Dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] zinke and [livejournal.com profile] hooloovoo_42. [livejournal.com profile] kiss_me_cassie egged me on, so if you spontaneously combust, you can blame her, okay?

Without further ado – I bring you David and Brad (in various guises) – two amazingly talented actors who also happen to be able to turn sensible women into puddles of lust.

By the way - the majority of the WW and S60 caps are pretty dark, compared to the DW ones - but then the TWW ones are much older. It's not your eyes or screen, it's just the way they are - sorry.

Let’s start off gently, shall we?

They both have rather crazy hair at times

They have the best puppy-dog eyes in the business

They’re amusing drunks

They both have lovely hands

(let your imaginations run riot, ladies, you know you want to!)

They're both very good at ... er... *melts*

They both have a Donna!

(Is there anyone reading this that doesn’t know that a)David and Catherine are huge fans of TWW and b) When asked what other TV show she’d liked to have been in, Catherine said “West Wing or Studio 60”, to which David commented, “ah, that’s because you wanted to be Bradley Whitford’s girlfriend”?)

They’re both quite… bendy ;-)

They both seem to have a bit of an oral fixation

When it comes to suffering, they can break our hearts and look utterly beautiful while they do it

The "don't fuck with me" faces are pretty hot

They get hostile when hostility is called for

They’re both huggers

They both have a smile that can light up a room

… and dimples to die for

Their smirks have been known to cause fangirl implosion at fifty paces

They both have an utterly irresistible grin

They both look hot in specs

- and cool in shades

… and can induce fangirl death by looking over the top of said glasses

They have a nice line in “come hither” looks (although I have to admit that I think David wins hands down on this one – go here if you need further proof!)

The way they look at "their women" has reduced us to puddles of fangirly goo on many an occasion

They could win trophies for snogging

While in some cases, their fashion sense can leave a lot to be desired –

It’s not really like we’re paying much attention to the clothes, are we?

*stares at the freckles*

At their best though – they can both work a pair of jeans

Not bad for a man in his jim-jams

Or in a tux

And I think, in the interest of completeness, I should include “The Tony Bennett thing” from the end of the evening

They both look really good in a nice suit.

Or, indeed – out of one!

I hope that's given everyone something to... er... think about!

Caps are from various places, including screenmusings, jems, Sonic Biro, The Medusa Cascade and Demon-cry.net and the BBC DW website.

And also enabled by various LJ friends including [livejournal.com profile] chloris67, [livejournal.com profile] coloneljack, [livejournal.com profile] dana_cz, [livejournal.com profile] crossmymind and others. If I’ve used something of yours and not credited you, I apologise; let me know, and I’ll fix it.

Oh wow

Im interested. Is it Josh who is attractive or is it Brad? And I understand it is DT who is attractive but is that why The Doctor is attractive?

I know the point isnt serious discussion, (and i can only do this cos it is the third time I have looked at the pictures) but some of those things are just Josh. Or just The Doctor. Where is the attractive coming from?

I was trying to explain my DT problem to someone who didnt know who he was (they were from another country) and they said they needed to see a picture and i heard myself say "well you might not be able to tell he is attractive just by looking at him" Doh! "i mean...it would be best if you could see him move about." Cos really, he isnt what we conventionally find attractive. A sensible part of my brain acknowledges that. Although I've never found those chiseled leading men types particularly compelling.

So i love Josh,( I love Josh like I loved John Carter from ER) but i dont really care for BW. I mean yeah he is good looking and i was impressed that Danny wasnt Josh in a way some actors dont seem to be able to manage. But i didnt really care about Danny. So what is it that I find attractive?

Where I would watch DT read the phone book out (I saw LA without a map, that was as equally interesting as the phone book would be) i dont love the doctor like i love Josh. I only really cared about Peter Carlise because he looked like David Tennant (and licked his fingers a lot). So what is it I find attractive?

Throughout my devotion to John Carter I never wanted to see Noah Wyle do anything else. I wasn't him I was interested in. As my Grannie would say about men when all you knew about them was that they were good looking "he could gan hyam and the kick the cat hinnie". Why am I interested in David Tennant? Like interested enough to sit through the Quatermass experiment? What is it he brings to the way he animates a character that is compelling to me? Is it just that he is a pretty man? Or does something of his character shine through and is that what is attractive? Is it because he seems like a lovely bloke in the stuff he does as himself?

That is waffly. I have been undoing a tangled ball of yarn for two days and am very tired. My apologies.

I know the point isnt serious discussion,

Why not? *g* I don't mind at all. It's such a personal thing. Someone on my flist had to ban a troll a few weeks back who, having looked at one or more of her wonderful DT picspams ended up by saying "I don't know how anyone can find him attractive". My reaction to that would be to find that person, kick their dog and break their white stick, but then I look at Leonardo di Caprio and go "eeew". I heard yesterday that a recent survey says that women prefer baby-faced men these days to the more rugged types.

Huh? Nobody asked me the question!

I think that what you say about both of them being attractive when in character because something of them shines through is actually very true. I think there's a helluva lot of Brad in Josh, and David brought that incredible enthusiasm and energy that he seems to have IRL to the Doctor. Both of them seem to be very grounded individuals who have a healthy attitude to their profession - they're not pretentious, they know it's a job and they do it very well. When I met Brad a couple of years back, he was terrific - charming, funny - everything you'd expect - but I know that was him still "in work mode"; meeting and talking to fans is part of the job. I've not met David (sadly) but I'm sure he's the same.

I totally get what you say about not being able to tell that someone's attractive from a photo, in the sense that I think both fellas are best seen in motion! But seriously, how could someone look at that pic of David glaring at the camera as Brendan Block, or sitting in front of those mirrors with the bedroom eyes and not think he's hot as hell?

WHY is he labelled "not conventionally handsome"? (I'm going to talk about David, because I can't forgive Brad for the awful moustache he's sprouted!) The whole "conventionally handsome" thing bugs me. I mean, what is that? Brad Pitt? (meh.) Tom Cruise (double meh.) George Clooney? Now we're talking. He's about the only man I'd describe in that way that I actually find attractive. Otherwise, I like the smart, funny types.
David's very skinny, which I can understand some women not liking. But he buffs up VERY nicely, as shown in that last pic! He has a nicely shaped face - well defined cheekbones, a strong chin, a gorgeous mouth and those beautiful deep-set eyes. The dimples and the freckles are a nice bonus if they're your sort of thing. His features are uneven, yes, but I think it makes him interesting.

I love Ten. Absolutely adore him. I'm still upset he's gone, but it's not David, it's the character I miss so much. David's busy, he's got loads of projects on the go and he'll be gracing our tellyboxes for years to come, I don't doubt. But God, I miss Ten. I've posted about it here a couple of times, trying to explain why I was (and still am!) so devastated at his departure. And I'm waffling now, so please feel free to check those posts out and we can continue this not-serious-discussion!

I suppose in the end, all we have to do is remember that old adage that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I think David Tennant's one of the most gorgeous men I've ever seen and I'll just feel smug and superior to those poor deluded women who can't see it!

When i say I dont love Ten like Josh I had to think about whether i really meant it. And i decided i did. I would have loved Josh had i met him, and John Carter. They were well written, well acted, characters which I believed in. They were smart funny men who struggled to live honourably in the midst of compromise in the world i also inhabit.

So Yes Ten is loveable. Utterly lovelable. And he is no less well written or acted. But he is alien. He is fantastic and impossible. He doesnt live in the same world. He can commit genocide but cant tell a girl he loves her. He is funny and charming but can grow another hand. He loves his friends but he cant resist pushing buttons which could lead to their death. It is a painful bit of self knowledge but if the TARDIS landed in my living room i wouldnt go. If Josh or John turned up I wouldn't stop to pack a bag (although you would have to hit Josh on the back of the head CJ style and make him go back to Donna).

Hahahah! Yes, so true!

Hmmmm! Interesting question.

One of the things I noticed about Brad/Josh/Danny is that some of those mannerisms, although he used them in different ways, are *totally* Brad. Like Caz, I met Brad a couple of years ago when we saw him in "Boeing, Boeing". There were still a lot of ways he moved as yet another character that were just *him*. And he is gorgeous and witty and charming (yes, in work mode) in real life - and has a well developed sense of humour, which is another thing that I find unbelievably sexy. Also, loves his kids to bits!

Even when he's doing things like appearing in congressional hearings, when he was clearly as nervous as a very nervous thing, he had passion and poise. When he spoke at the Princeton Commencement ceremony, he was inspiring.

Yes, I like conventionally good looking blokes. I need to get Patrick Dempsey up on my "Wall of Hot" sometime soon, along with Fox Mulder, Indiana Jones, Cary Grant and the rest, but I think guys like Brad and David are more attractive for being incredibly intelligent and amazing people as much as being brilliantly talented actors who are also gorgeous.

With you onn the John Carter/Noah Wyle thing. I fancied Carter like mad. Noah, not so much.

I'm not sure whether I've answered your question, but I like contemplating the evidence :-)

I like conventionally good looking blokes

Me too - but they don't have the same effect on me!

I'd argue that David Duchovny actually falls into the not-conventional category, but whatever, he's nice to look at :-) Patrick Dempsey doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid, although I did like him in Enchanted and can see that he's attractive.

I think we owe it to ourselves to contemplate evidence like this.
