I should be marking French tests. But I'm doing this instead.

[livejournal.com profile] hooloovoo_42 did the ask me five questions and I'll tell you no lies! meme yesterday, and here are the questions she asked me.

1) What made you decide to go into teaching?
2) Which is the best buddy twosome - Dan & Casey, Josh & Sam or Matt & Danny, and why?
3) Austen or Dickens?
4) Did Toby do it? Give reasons for your answer!
5) Which 3 books would you take to a desert island?

1) It was a decision I thought long and hard about; probably for about 18 months in all, because I knew teaching wouldn't be an easy job. But I was just the wrong side of 40(!) and thought that as I'd probably have another 20 years or so working once both the girls were at school, that I wanted to do something that was worth getting out of bed for in the morning. The pay isn't great, but it's better than the majority of the jobs around here, and I thought it would give me a reasonable amount of security and flexibility. I also thought it was one of the few professions where my age wouldn't count against me, but it appears I was wrong on all three of those points! I honestly didn't expect it to be so hard to get a permanent job - that has really surprised me.

2) Matt and Danny, I think, with Dan and Casey running a close second. Much as WW is my fave of the three, I don't think Josh and Sam came across as "close" as Matt and Danny did. That was probably helped by the fact that Brad and Matt seemed to get along like a house on fire in real life - the bond came across as that much deeper and stronger.

3) Bloody hell, kill me now, why don't you? I adore them both, and I guess there's more Dickens to read through if I was just allowed the one. BUT - I'd have to go for Austen. Even though she only finished six novels, they're just so... perfect, and her sense of humour and sarcasm really strikes a chord.

4) I still vacillate on that one. Some days, I think he might have done, others I don't. Given the circumstances, (his brother, etc.) and the fact that Toby could be a self-righteous pain in the ass who was often frustrated with Bartlet and tried to push him to where he (Toby) thought he should be, it's plausible. And if you take the plotline and given motivations at face value it does seem as though he did it. But these aren't simple characters, and if for no other reason than I can't see Toby stooping to be so... underhand (he'd want people to know, I think!) there are times where I think there's no way he did it!
My ass is sore from sitting on the fence for so long!!

5) Only three... woe! Emma. One of the WW script books (probably the first one, but the other one would do if I happened to grab it instead!) The Way we Live Now.

I'm skewing this slightly and saying that if you want to ask me five questions, please feel free! Or if you want me to ask you five, comment to that effect, and I can do that, too!
