caz963: (Autumn misty bench)
I think this is the first time for about the last six years, that I feel as though Christmas isn't creeping up on me. Usually, there's so much to do at school, that I seem to live from week to week by numbers, rather than actually realising the date so that it's suddenly the end of term and Christmas is just a few days away.

But not being at work right now means I've had time to do stuff at a more leisurely pace, like making the cake, puddings, mincemeat and various pickles. I've actually enjoyed doing it all rather than seen it as something I need to get done NOW or I won't have the time to do it at all.

There is, however, one thing I still have to do and I want to pick the brains of my super-intelligent f-list. Christmas cards. I said last year that I really would rather stop sending cards to people just for the sake of it - and come on, we all do it, send cards to people we don't otherwise think about all year! - and give the money I'd have spent on the cards and postage (plus a bit) to charity.

I'd still send a card to close family and friends, but I really want to cut down on the rest. For one thing, writing makes my RSI flare up, and for another, it's so bloody time-consuming.

But how do I go about this? I know that some of the people on my list have an email address, so I could send an ecard and then explain that I'm donating money instead, but what about those that don't, or whose addys I don't know? Or am I just being an enormous Humbug! and should just shut up and get on with it?

Any ideas?

Gah. I'm away from LJ for 3 days and it's taken me about an hour to catch up! And even then, there are some posts I've skimmed and need to go back to read properly.

The absence was due to more visitors staying over the weekend - hence more tidying up, more cooking with the kids etc. Cazlet #2 baked a cake pretty much all by herself (under supervision of course), Cazlet #1 made apple crumble and we all had hands in various other things which emerged from the kitchen!

I also made a really awesome Citrus Pudding. It's simple to make and it tastes fantastic - the one drawback is the fact that it takes ages to zest the fruit :( But it's worth it in the end as you end up with a lovely crunchy sponge on top of a zingy sauce underneath. Yum.

I've had a massive, post-summer clothes-clearout today, too. I can actually close the drawers and shut the wardrobe, but I doubt that'll last long. So there is a trip to the charity shop and the clothes bank in my future.

I watched DW on Saturday but haven't had time to write anything about it yet and I'm too tired now, so maybe tomorrow.

A week or so ago, [livejournal.com profile] topaz_eyes posted something about her cross-stitching projects and I said that I'd post pictures of some of the stuff I've made over the years. I haven't done very much at all in the last ten years - a combination of kids and work and discrtaction by interwebz being the main causes of that, I suppose, but the house is full of cushions and pictures. Even Mr Caz has been known to take up a needle now and again!

You know how that is, right? You go into Tesco's for a pint of milk and a loaf and come out with £80 worth of shopping.

Well, I didn't do that today. I came out with a new phone.

And a pint of milk and a loaf.

Cazlet #1 has been on for a while about getting a new mobile. Hers is only about 18 months old, but of course, all her mates have got posher ones... I hadn't said I'd buy her a new one - in fact, I said I wasn't going to and that she'd have to save up for one herself, but we were looking around anyway so she could see how much money she'd need when I came across one of those deals that looks like it's too good to be true - which the cynic in me tends to avoid. But I read the small print and as far as I could see, there were no hidden extras, so I've just got myself a nice new smartphone with 100 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB of data for a tenner a month!. (I don't make a lot of calls on my mobile, so that's plenty of minutes for normal purposes.)

Well, it would have been daft not to, wouldn't it? Which means that Cazlet #1 can have my old phone which fits her criteria (it's a) a touchscreen and b) pink!).

The only snag is that in order to transfer her number over I've had to change mine, which I must have had for about 20 years.

I suppose I'll manage to remember it eventually.

Snow Day #3

caz963: (DT looks up)
Another day at home for me - but this time school was actually closed so I don't feel so bad. Mind you, given that we had another fairly heavy snowfall late last night, I don't think I'd have been able to get in anyway. I've done bugger all workwise - just made a couple of powerpoints; I've spent the rest of the time trying to tidy up some of the files on my laptop and PC. I'm fairly organised, but I always find that there's either a)stuff that you put somewhere just so you can... er... put it somewhere and b) stuff you save that you keep adding to and which ends up needing it's own folder or something.

I usually find that's more of a problem with pictures and icons than anything else - I save them so I don't forget about them, and then end up spending ages organising them all at a later date. I'm nice and tidy now though - and I can't complain; I've spent the day drooling over staring at sorting out pictures of David Tennant :-)!
Which reminds me, it's time for an icon clear out as well.

Oh, and by the way - does anyone out there have the Last-FM playlist widget on their profile page? I reorganised my page the other day and in doing so, took out the coding for the widget - and now I can't find it again on their website. Help, anyone?

So this week has been kind of a false start. That crappy course on Monday, a day in school on Tuesday and I've not been in the rest of the week! I've got a couple of things to do over the weekend, but most of my stuff is at school, so I'm not going to bust a gut for once.

And now Thunderbirds is on the telly. ;-)

Okay, so first of all... *drools at new icon* courtesy of the ever wonderful [livejournal.com profile] coloneljack. Just what I needed after a totally manic week - a gorgeous man to stare at.

Now the serious stuff. I'm going to treat myself to an mp4 player and am currently looking at either the 80GB iPod or the 60GB Creative Zen one. I have to say, I'm leaning towards the latter - I have a Zen mp3 player which I'm very happy with and I've heard good reports about most of their products. Yes, it's a bit smaller in capacity than the iPod, but that's reflected in the price. I also hear many grumbles about Apple which is why I'm not sold on the iPod. (Oh, and do you have to use iTunes to put everything on an iPod? See, I'm sooooo technically challenged!) So if anyone out there who is much more savvy about this sort of thing than I am - which I'd guess is probably ALL of you! - can help me make my mind up, I'll be eternally grateful! I might even write you some porn when I get time... (but don't hold your breath!)

*hugs*

A friend of mine sent me this today and it was too good not to share! So if any of you are feeling PMS-y right now, this is for you! (Apologies if you've already seen it.)

letter to a manufacturer... ) Heh.

For my fellow Brits - and anyone else who's been following the current "will he, won't he, when will he" surrounding Tony Blair's announcement that he'll be stepping down as PM some time in the next year - this is inspired. A snippet:

In a joint statement today, the Emperor has promised a 'stable and orderly transition of power' to Imperial Chancellor Darth Vader within the next twelve months. Ending months of speculation as to when Lord Vader would betray Emperor Palpatine and hurl him from a rickety gantry, a spokesman confirmed that the handover was planned to take place at next year's Imperial convention at the forest moon of Endor.

Have fun - go read the rest!
