DW Rewatch - 3x01, Smith and Jones

Smith and Jones is pretty much a straight-forward alien/adventure story with new aliens and the introduction of a new companion – medical student, Martha Jones.
That said though, the interesting thing is the way that once again, Rusty gives us an amazing insight into who Martha is with just a few short scenes – in much the same way he did with Donna in The Runaway Bride. It’s something I’ve come to notice and appreciate even more during my rewatches. She’s talking to several of her family members all at once and we discover that her parents are divorced or separated, her mother is bitter and her dad has a new girlfriend that nobody but him likes; that she has a sister, Tish, and a brother, Leo.

We also learn that Martha is the peacemaker – during just one series of conversations she’s trying to soothe her mum, be nice to dad’s bimbo girlfriend and help Leo and Tish avoid the fallout of what might happen at a family get-together that night.

Until, that is, she’s interrupted by this weirdo who walks up to her, takes off his tie and flaps it in her face.

I’m not going to write a full recap – you’ve seen it, you know how it goes!
I am, however, going to post lots of pretty pictures, because … I want to :-)

Out of bed. This morning. Me?

Nah. Innocent as the day is long, me.

The wink. Guh.

Was he in for a procedure on his hair? It was definitely starting to get a bit… more sticky-uppy this episode?

It’s the début of the blue suit!

I like the blue suit.
>
I have to say, the casting of Anne Reid as a bloodsucking alien was nothing short of inspired. And she even brings her own straw!

The Platoon of Judoon on the Moon!

Pretty.

More pretty.

The raised eyebrow of fangirl implosion. How Martha just doesn’t keel over at that point is nothing short of amazing.

The Judoon are thickies and have deleted all the computer files.

The Doctor’s hair is NOT happy.

Don’t try this at home.

Looks like a severe case of pins and needles

Bugger. He loved that sonic screwdriver.

Tongue.

Sorry about this, but…

I’m going to have to snog you senseless.

Huh?
That’s the first time this version of the Doctor has initiated a "kiss". If Martha’s reaction is anything to go by, he’s pretty good at it ;-)

The Doctor pulls his “don’t mind me, I’m stupid” act.

I can think of better things to do with that neck…

This is the bit that always seems odd to me. Well, not odd, but I wonder if there were some chunks cut out of the final episode or something, because while it’s clear that the Doctor has done this so that the Judoon can capture the little old lady plasmavore, we have to jump to the conclusions that he’s a) relying on Martha not to let him die and b) relying on the Judoon to send the hospital back to Earth once they’ve made their arrest.
Oh and also3, c) that the little old lady plasmavore hasn’t rigged an MRI scanner to blow the place to smithereens.

Of course, Martha gives practically her last breath to save the Doctor. A measure of the effect he has on almost everyone he meets; that they’re prepared to give their lives to save his even though they’ve just met him. It’s obviously something that weighs heavily on his conscience – always has done.

Back on Earth… a rare, left dimple sighting!

Martha was having a bit of a crappy evening with the family

Until now, that is :-) (And if that isn't a "come and get me" smile, I don't know what is!)

Whoa, Nellie! Things are looking up.

Wanna try out my sonic screwdriver? (Get your minds out of the gutter! Um. Yeah. It’s where mine is!)

The cheap trick.

It’s bigger on the inside
I love that bit – according to the DWC for the episode, it was David’s idea to mouth the words as Martha said them. Clever boy.

Is it? Oh, the faces he pulls… (and now it's the turn of the more often seen right dimple!)

Where shall we go then?

That wasn’t a snog. Honest.
I guess you can't blame the girl for thinking otherwise. Weird stuff happens, and then this rather dashing bloke appears, full of energy and surprises, who sorts the bad-guys, saves everyone (even though she helps!), tells her he's an alien and (as she thinks) kisses her. Then he deliberately seeks her out afterwards. Oh, and he looks like David Tennant.
No wonder she's smitten.

Skinny alien boys in suits aren’t her type. Pull the other one, Martha, it’s got bells on.

Welcome aboard!
I have to fess up at this point and say that Martha has kinda grown on me. I didn't like her at first - I thought she was too similar in some ways to Rose - very young, very pretty, very ga-ga over the Doctor - but having seen her in S4, odd episodes of S3 repeated here and there and the Torchwood episodes she was in, I've revised my opinion. Towards the end of S3 - in the Human Nature two-parter, and in the finale episodes, I really began to like her. I don't find her as annoying as I did, and in fact, prefer her to Rose.
