Oh, I rather like the imagery too, and like you, am willing to forgive the cheesy because of all the other great stuff here.
Thing with those Dalek episodes - there is actually some good character stuff there, but the overall weakness of the story itself can tend to obscure it a bit. So while I was wincing a bit, I'm glad I watched them again, because otherwise, they're not high on my list!
