caz963: (eleven)

Well. Here we go again.

My initial reaction is that I liked it a lot. I fully expected it to be good, and I wasn't at all disappointed. Matt Smith was excellent, and although I feel he's got a bit further to go before the role is truly 'his', based on what I saw tonight, he'll get there, no problem.

I like the fact that Eleven is different from Ten (despite my abiding love for the Tennant, I didn't want an imitation) - although there were definite flashes of him in there, which is exactly as it should be. He babbles, but it's different and very much in keeping with the whole 'nerdy professor' thing he's got going on; he's not as graceful, but has his own distinctive way of moving.

There was a lot of humour - I think my favourite line had to be "you're Scottish - fry something!" - and now I know why Moff especially asked RTD to make sure that Ten was wearing a tie when he regenerated!

The young actress who played Amelia was utterly charming, and Karen Gillan was a lot better than I expected her to be. Mind you, my expectations weren't that high, so that's not really saying much. I loved the reveal at the end that she was leaving on the eve of her wedding.

The Doctor and runaway (ginger) brides... hm.

A name check for the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey made me smile, and I liked the way that the it was used - five minutes for him, twelve years for her, a great reminder of the fact that his life doesn't always happen to him in the right order; but the best bit for me was the Doctor standing there yelling at the alien ship about the Earth being defended - and then the images of his ten predecessors followed by his walking 'through' the final shot of Ten.

The things I didn't like... I've already said that I'm not keen on the revamped TARDIS interior, although maybe it'll grow on me. Whereas the last one was very 'organic' in feel, this new version seems to be a bit more 'techno' despite the inclusion of the typewriter and the gramophone horn. I dunno... like I say, perhaps I'll come to like it more with time.

What I HATED with a PASSION though was the new title sequence. WTF was that? When did the time vortex turn into clouds of ice? And I could have cried when I heard the new version of the theme tune. Why fix something that's not broken? I know a lot of people preferred the theme tune of S1-3 and didn't like the revamp that was used in VotD and S4 - I wasn't one of them - but this was a travesty. I read an interview with Murray Gold a while back in which he said he was reworking it SLIGHTLY - but that was horrible. In fact, it was so horrible that I'd clapped my hands over my ears after the first five seconds or so, so I'm going to have to force myself to listen to it properly so I can analyse it and work out why I hated it so much. I'm a BIG fan of what Murray's done with the music for the show, so this was a real disappointment for me. That said, the music in the rest of the episode was pretty good - but I'll definitely be skipping the opening titles theme when I get the soundtrack album!

So - yay! It's back. I'm not over Ten and don't think I ever will be, but I'm really glad the new team have made such a great start.

Looking forward to next week :-)
