What I meant by 'progression' with regard to character development is that there hasn't really been any, so I think we're on the same page there.
My problem with Amy - and how others are falling over themselves to squee about her - is that I've so far found nothing about her that I can latch on to (and I don't think that Gillan is a very good actress) I'm sure it's deliberate on Moffat's part, but it's a risky strategy.
