I can't believe I missed this when you first posted!!
I'm with you. I didn't like Martha that much when I first met her, but now she's hand down my favorite character. Donna & Ten are a close 2nd & 3rd, but I actually watch the Tourchwood episodes with Martha long after I gave up on the show just because she was in them. I think the difference is that Rose wore how special she was on her sleeve, while Martha was all levels of kick-ass and thinking it was perfectly ordinary. More importantly, she was her own woman, independent and awesome in her own right.
