At the pictures

caz963Cazlet #1's school finished for the summer holidays yesterday so we had a day out. We did shopping, lunch and went to see Deathly Hallows Pt 2, which I thought was really good.
It's a long time since I read the book, so I have no idea what was left in and what was taken out - although I think the film could probably have done without the epilogue, which I remember as being probably the most disappointing (and quite frankly, pointless) part of the book. And no amount of make-up could make Daniel Radcliffe look 40!
We saw the 2D version. I admit I've not seen many 3D films. Partly that's because I dislike being ripped off and charged an extra tenner (for a family) AND having to pay for the glasses on top. And partly it's because I'm not sure how much it adds to the substance or to my enjoyment of the film. It's easy to see the points at which the 3D would have made an impact, and I'm sure it looked great. But it didn't need it.
Anyway, it was well worth seeing. Practically everyone who'd ever appeared in the series was back in this one, although some (like Emma Thompson) were on screen for mere seconds.
There were trailers for Johnny English - Reborn, which might be a laugh. I was principally interested in the fact that Gillian Anderson is playing "M" to Atkinson's Bond. I want to see Super 8. I've no idea what it's about, and the trailer left me none the wiser, but it has a pretty good pedigree, so that's on my list. Much as I like Robert Downey Jr, I might not get around to Sherlock Holmes 2 until the DVD comes out; same with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy which features the cream of British thesps (including Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch). I was most gobsmacked by the trailer that consisted at first of Nicholas Farrell and Roger Allum talking to someone off-screen... and then you hear a voice which is clearly meant to be that of Margaret Thatcher. It's a bloody good impression of her, too - and then it's revealed to be none other than Myrtle Strewth! (Meryl Streep, for those of you who aren't familiar with Clive James' version of her name!) The film is The Iron Lady, but it's not the sort of thing I'll probably be able to get to at the cinema. But Myrtle has certainly done her homework!
Oh, there was also a trailer for War Horse, which looks absolutely superb. We're going to see the play on Monday and I want to see the film when it comes out. Mind you, I was sniffling at the bloody trailer, so gawd knows how I'm going to make it through an entire film! I could never watch "animal pictures" as a kid - no Lassie on Saturday afternoon telly for me.
After that, we did lunch and shopping so now I'm both knackered and broke.
