I've got to post something about tonight's Any Dream Will Do, because I'm pissed.
I have to start out by saying this isn't normally the sort of show I watch - I'm not a big fan of reality TV, although this sort of show is one of the better examples in general - there is genuine talent involved.

I didn't see the one last year where they cast a new "Maria" for The Sound of Music but although it's a similar show, I can't help thinking that someone - the producers, Andrew Lloyd Webber, maybe all of them - have made a crucial error of judgement. The strength of the teenybopper fangirl hormone.
There are undoubtedly some good-looking young men involved. I can see that - but most of them are young enough to be my son, and in any case, I've never gone for the obviously pretty boys. Not my type.
But this is about finding someone who is capable of being a leading man in a demanding role on the West End stage, where punters are going to be paying around £50 per ticket.
He needs to have a good voice of course, be able to act, have stage presence ... oh, and as Tracy frequently reminds me, look good in a loincloth! (Superficial? Her no way! :))

We're now down to eight potential Josephs after tonight's double elimination show, but the final decision has really pissed me off, as one of the strongest candidates was voted into the "sing off" by the public vote - and was then dismissed by ALW. Tracy and I were IMing during the show and really, the air between here and London must've been a pretty shade of blue. We couldn't believe it.
He was one of the three strongest candidates (the other two being Lee and Daniel). He was also the oldest, at 35 - a fact which the presenter and others seemed to make sure they mentioned at every opportunity - and I can't help but think that that is one of the reasons he was voted into the bottom two.
In the earlier "sing off" - Anthony and Craig were head to head, and although Anthony had serious problems with his performance, Craig actually received the lowest number of votes. But ALW chose to "save" Craig, which was probably the right decision, as he clearly had concerns about Anthony's ability to carry a performance eight times a week. But in the second round of voting, Craig wasn't in the bottom two - which I thought was probably a sympathy vote. So it was down to Seamus and Ben - whose performance last week was quite simply atrocious, and about whom, ALW must surely have concerns.
Tonight's show didn't really have a spark of life until Daniel came on to sing The Lady is a Tramp, which he carried off really well. He was followed by Lee, who clearly showed (again) that he's the best actor of the lot.
Most of the other performances were bland and nothing out of the ordinary. I think Lewis and Keith (who we've nicknamed "skeletor" and "the baby") could be Josephs in a few years time, but they need time for their voices to develop. Ben and Craig have no depth to their voices. Anthony may have fucked up tonight, but his voice at least had resonance and a certain quality to it. I can't look at Chris without my sunglasses on - seriously, does anyone think those teeth are all his own? Which leaves Rob the Builder - he clearly has raw talent and a good voice, but he needs something more than that in order to carry a West End show.

ALW was really angry last week about the sing off - he said on the show that the two guys involved shouldn't have been there. And he said the same on his blog. So I can't help wondering if he's indulging in a bit of tactical voting himself. I said this over at [livejournal.com profile] lee_mead, but I'm seriously starting to think that after last week's vote ALW is keeping in some of the weaker singers now, in the hope that they'll be eliminated, leaving the two strongest candidates, Lee and Daniel.

Like I said, I don't normally watch this type of show, and I don't normally get this worked up about this sort of thing, but that decision tonight was just wrong.
