To me, it underscored the point that some people shouldn't be together, regardless of how much they love each other.
That's exactly it. A happy ending for them right now would be for them to part friends who care about each other deeply - and then perhaps in a future we won't see, find their way back - they're just wrong for each other now.
And yeah, Brad was just... funny and tender and sweet and REAL. I have to say that I must give Amanda Peet her due here (I forgot to mention it before), but she did good too. When Danny asks if she's in pain - the way she looks at him you can see the words in her head - "not now you're here" and I have to give her credit for that at least! (Although having a guy like Danny looking at you like that would help a lot, of course!)
