Took the kids to the cinema this afternoon to see Inkheart. Actually, it was just as much for me and Mr Caz, because we wanted to get out of the house!
The cinema was almost empty as were the streets, by the look of it.
The film was quite good, I thought, although I'd definitely say it's more suitable for older kids than younger ones. I liked the premise; that a "silvertongue" can make things from books come to life by just reading out-loud. It's always refreshing to come across something that original, and the supporting cast - Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent - were terrific, with the now-ubiquitous Andy Serkis turning up as the perfect villain. Yet despite all that, I couldn't help feeling that there was something missing. I can't really put my finger on it, and the ending did seem somewhat contrived - although I haven't read the book so I don't know if that was faithful to the original. Still, it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours on a cold winter afternoon.
There were trailers for Ice Age 3, Bolt, Benjamin Button and there was a teaser for the new Star Trek movie (not a full trailer though). I'd like to see all of those when they come out - of course the kids are definitely up for the first two :)
It's time to start getting back to 'normal' now, I suppose. I've had a bit of a tidy u- today, and have just about finished up all the leftovers. We had Turkey and Leek Flan with Cheese for tea, and I've made and frozen several portions of filling for Creamed Turkey en Croute, both of which have been firm favourites for years.
I plan to set aside a few hours for work tomorrow - I've got more marking to do and some lessons to write. We're spending New Year's Eve at my parents; the kids are sleeping over and we're all going to a Panto on New Year's Day. I confess I'm not a big fan of New Year's - I don't think I ever have been, really. I don't make resolutions - if I want to do something I'll do it, and no amount of "resolving" will make me more - or less - inclined towards it. New Year's Eve always feels horribly anti-climactic to me, and New Year's day always marks the beginning-of-the-end of the holiday :-(

Date: 2008-12-29 08:43 pm (UTC)sorry about your car... and the telecom folks... but it seems like you're having an otherwise nice break with your family, so that's good (altho it would be better if you were *writing*. sorry. Just had to stick that in there.)
Older son and I read "Inkheart" a year or two ago. Yes, together: I only stopped reading aloud to him this past summer, now that he's almost 12 :) Anyway, we both really liked it, so I'm glad to hear that the movie at least wasn't terrible. We couldn't get into book #2 (Inkspell), btw, so haven't even tried book #3(Ink-somethingelse... death, maybe?). But the first one was very good. The idea of certain readers being able to bring a book into real life was just too delicious!
and you can imagine all the things that I would do if I had that particular talent... and yes, I do consider screen and teleplays books, why do you ask??

Date: 2008-12-29 08:46 pm (UTC)I sent a ficlet off to be beta'ed yesterday, so I've been writing a little. It's not quite finished, and it's short by my standards, but I hope to post it before New Year!

Date: 2008-12-29 10:52 pm (UTC)I love the casting coup though for this movie. Cornelia Funke states in her writings that when she was creating the character of Silvertongue she always saw/heard in her minds eye Brendan Fraser... so when he said yes, she was over the moon. And Paul Bettany as Dustfinger is just wonderful grrrrrl!

Date: 2008-12-30 04:23 am (UTC)Haven't heard anything about Inkheart though I am interested in seeing Button purely because it's a F.S. Fitzgerald derivative.
And no thank you on the new 90210 in Space... I mean the new Star Trek. That is NOT my ST, I'm afraid.
