Matt Smith.

Yes. I imagine the reaction of many was the same as mine - who??

But you know what? I'm okay with it. In fact, I'm more than okay, I was actually pleasantly surprised.

David Tennant was always going to be an incredibly tough act to follow, and I'm glad that Moffat and Co. have picked someone who's (largely) unknown and - at first glance anyway - completely different. I've made no secret of the fact that I wasn't in favour of any of the names on the bookies' lists, and I was really relieved that it wasn't any of them.

From the short interview snippets, I thought Matt Smith looked very promising. He has a very different 'look'; very quirky and, as Elinor remarked, he also has great hair. *g*

So although I really wish the team hadn't felt it necessary to announce this so early, I'm not disappointed with the choice, and am interested to see what he makes of it.

One thing though - does this mean we'll be in for more practically pre-pubescent companions? I hope not.

Oh, and another - ten was younger than nine, eleven is younger than ten. (Looks wise.) So does that mean that the final doctor will be in nappies?

Good point about what this may mean in terms of the companions! And yeah, it probably made sense going for a relative unknown to follow DT. As you say he's been SO successful in making the role his own that it would have been incredibly hard for someone better known to try and follow him I guess.

I've only seen Matt Smith in the two Sally Lockhart films the Beeb have done and he was okay in them, so hopefully he'll be able to pull it off...

As for announcing it this far out, I guess they figured they had no choice if they wanted any control over the announcement, you just know the news would have leaked out at some point the more time passed.

Yeah, I'm sure that's why they've broken the news this early - they knew they'd never be able to keep it quiet, especially once he starts filming. But still, I wish it hadn't been necessary...

Maybe I'm being naive, but I can't believe Moffat et al would have entrusted the role to someone they weren't convinced would be able to pull it off.

Laughing madly!!

Oh dear. Although. There is a part of me that would be delighted to see a Doctor in nappies either animated or dubbed over, creating utter chaos!

I have to admit, I'm still a bit WTF about it all. BUt I'll give the bloke a chance. I am curious to see what he makes of the character, but I think the black guy from Survivors would've made a great mean and moody Doctor.

I feel better than I thought I would, you know? I think the guy definitely has... something - and I can't believe that Moffat and his team would have chosen someone they weren't 100% sure about, not after they've all done such a good job with the show under RTD.

But then, what the hell do I know??

He. I had no clue who he was either (but then when do I ever?) but I do like what I see. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that he is young but I have to admit I'd love to see them give him a grown up woman as companion!

Yes, I think he's definitely got something. I think they should give him "grown up" companions, too!

OMG we have an EMO Dr Who... who'da thunk it!

Why am I having flashes of Star Gates ep when they are thinking of recasting with a 'younger sexier cast'

I have to say, that I don't think that's what they're doing - RTD and team have been too careful to appeal to the old-Who fans like me as well as the kids who have never seen it before, so I don't think they'd risk losing a section of the audience - and anyway, they don't need to.

I definitely think there's something about the guy though - it's just daft they've had to announce it so early.

Definitely something about him - loved the hair and did anyone else notice the wiggly finger thing he did when he was trying to express himself? Looked like it could be a sign of someone quirky and interesting.

PS Havn't visited since you re-vamped - love the background!

Yes, he definitely seems "quirky" enough to be able to pull it off.

And I'm afraid I'm not technologically able to make a layout like this; I think I got this one at [livejournal.com profile] mintyappple and customised it! I just fancied a change for the new year. And if you've not been here for a while, you might have missed this (http://caz-fic.livejournal.com/15680.html). :-)
