Yes, it's early, but I'm going to spring clean my icon collection. To make it easier, I've just pasted them all into a document so that I can see them all at once and divide them into groups. (Anal? Moi? You bet!)

I was thinking I should put them on some sort of rotation... anyone out there do that? And if you do, what do you do?

All ideas gratefully received - no matter how daft! (Yes, I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] hooloovoo_42 and [livejournal.com profile] teresadivicenzo!)

All I can suggest is check out the credits on my userpics and see if any of the makers grab you. I'll have a look through the stuff I've grabbed and see if there are any you might want.

I've started saving the ones I retire into a separate folder, but usually forget to say whose they were.

Ta. I'm tidying up the icons folder on the lappy, too, so I can see what I've got and what I probably won't use.

I save them to folder on my computer and have categories. I'm so completely anal about it. I have folders for movies, tv, seasons, odds and ends, text only, travel, West Wing, Sports Night, etc. Within each folder I have other groupings. So within TV, I have folders for 30 Rock, The Office, Arrested Development, etc. (West Wing is a stand alone because there are just sooooo many.)

I open the folders up as thumbnails and can skim through and see the collection. I always save them with a name and then who created it so as to give proper credit.

So as the seasons change, my mood changes, when the situation calls for a specific icon, easy to find.

I warned you I was completely anal. I even color code folders in my office. No I don't have a problem.

Does it come as any surprise to you that I'm the same? I have TV icons (and like you, not only does WW have a category, but it's subdivided into "General WW", "Josh", "Donna" and "J/D"!) movie icons, seasonal icons (also divided into sub-folders) etc. etc.

I think this is going to take some time...

I do it similarly to gatz--I have a "LJ Icons" folder, then subfolders for either the topic, or the icon-maker. For instance, I have a lot of icons by [livejournal.com profile] girlyb_icons, so she gets her own folder, then I subdivide that by topic.

Otherwise, I divide the topic folders by icon maker, if there's a lot, or the miscellaneous ones just lie about at the bottom of the topic folder until I notice that I have a few by a single maker. Since I can see the icon by viewing by 'thumbnails', I don't usually bother to label it by what it is, but rather by who to credit.

As far as 'rotation'...the only ones I typically rotate are the seasonal ones, most of which are my girlyb icons. The others, I just do as it suits me. I do have a folder labeled 'my used LJ icons', so I know what I've actually used before, but I rarely even open it again. When I delete an icon, I just recopy from LJ to that folder. (This crazy step is also because I have three computers, and not all my icons are on all my computers---so I never know where stuff has come from.)

I hadn't thought of filing them by maker (in which case I'd have a YOOOOGE "Linz" folder!)

The idea of a previously used folder might be something I will steal :)

Did you sort out your mood theme problem, btw?

I did! Thanks to piney, she noticed that I was using the folder address (sXXX) when I should have been using the image address (iXXX), and then from there I saw that the code was trying to call them .png, when they're actually .gif. (That was an error on the part of the theme maker--she actually made a note of it in the post, but either I missed it, or she only added it after I'd downloaded.)

Now if I could just get my audio and video issues sorted for vid-making, I'd be *all* set. :-)

It all depends on how you figure you'll think of the icons when you want them. The way my brain works, I think--hey, I want a nice stock-photo seasonal shot....and I know that for me, those are either [livejournal.com profile] girlyb_icons, or [livejournal.com profile] pink_cosmos. It's easier than trying to divvy them all out and label folders with 'pictures of cats in summer', or 'snowy houses' or stuff like that.

I do, in fact, have a huge folder for [livejournal.com profile] coloneljack. :-)
