caz963: (Eleven 2)

The Hungty Earth was a solid episode, but served more or less completely as a set up for what looks to be a pretty exciting denoument next week. I enjoyed it – I’m always a sucker for the return of old monsters – and I liked the set up, the Doctor and a few humans battling an initially unknown threat, but it was fairly pedestrian. That said though, I thought it was well-written and acted.

I liked the little nods to the past – the Doctor’s tendency to taste things he picks up being a recent habit, his comment about the monsters being scared of him rather than the other way around, but the best part was the conversation with the captured Siluran. I’m still having problems being convinced by some aspects of Matt Smith’s performance as the Doctor, but I liked what he did in that scene – and his non-response to the final jibe –“what have you given up?” felt right.

What was that stuff about Rory and Amy waving at themselves from the other side of the field?

I’m really enjoying the interactions between the Doctor and Rory – the “not” Hi-5 made me giggle and also, the part where the Doctor and Amy are breaking into the base (or whatever) and it’s the Doctor who’s concerned about Rory catching them up really brought it home how different Eleven and Rory are to Ten and Mickey. Even though Ten clearly ended up respecting Mickey by the end of The Age of Steel (and was much warmer towards him than Nine ever was), Eleven and Rory seemed to have hit it off better from the start.

There wasn’t much Amy this week, which was a plus. If her skirts get any shorter though, she’ll be walking around showing her knickers. Somebody, please get the girl some leggings.

How great was Nasreen, though? She blags her way onto the TARDIS and then takes everything that happens in her stride. Seriously, the campaign for Meera Syal to be the next companion starts NOW! She was fabulous - loved the braces pinging. Let’s have another companion who’s older than a foetus – look how great the last one turned out to be!

How appropriate was the use of Digging a Hole in the DWC? Sir Bernard of Cribbins, I salute you!

It was on, but I wasn't paying full attention so missed out on a lot of the visual stuff. However, I did find Rory much better this week.

I'm still not getting the hang of Eleven. He's fixated on waving his arms about, but his facial expressions don't come over as particuarly expressive. One of the reasons I started doing other things was his non-range of facial movements. He just looks mildly bewildered most of the time.

Meera Syal would be a far better companion than Amy. How can she not see herself & Rory still being together in 10 years time? And I was worried about Rory a) making her take her ring off and b) putting it down on the TARDIS console.

*starts building "Nasreen for companion" flags... and buttons... and signs*!

Even with only one episode of seeing her, I already feel a lot more connected to Nasreen than to Amy. She just has... character! I hope she doesn't die at the end :-/
