30 Days of Nu-Who - Day Eighteen

This is a tough one.
As someone said in the comments to my Favourite Rose Moment post, it's hard to choose a 'favourite' moment when you don't like a character very much. And I'm afraid that I'm still not sold on Amy. I read a quote today in a magazine which basically said that Amy so far has been more of a plot device than a character, which is what a lot of us have been complaining about. There was so much preoccupation on the part of Moff and the writers to make her odd and mysterious - a girl whose "life doesn't make sense" that they forgot to give her a real personality. As far as I'm concerned, she came across as self-centred and arrogant, a typically egotistical teenager who thinks she knows everything. Maybe my view is coloured by the fact that in my job, I come across that "type" every day - and she got on my nerves from the start.
I'm still determined to try to like her - and hope that in S6, now that she's "real" Amy again rather than the girl whose family was eaten by the cracks - she'll be more of a rounded character.
She did have a few good moments though - and here's the one I've picked. It's from Amy's Choice -

AMY:
Oh. Ow. Really. Ow! It's coming.
DOCTOR:
Help her, you're a doctor.
RORY:
You're a doctor!
DOCTOR:
It's okay, we're doctors. (squats down as if to catch the baby) (bwah!) What do we do?
AMY:
Okay, it's not coming.
DOCTOR:
What?
AMY:
This is my life now and it just turned you white as a sheet. So don't you call it dull again, ever. Okay?
I think it's Eleven's reactions that make that a favourite moment :-)

(Amy's a bit more rounded than *that*, true, but her starting out as an orphan not only was a bit of an old-school touch, but enabled Moffat to dispense with all that family-baggage stuff that the RTD-haters found so annoying.)
But I digress. I too hope that Amy might start to develop properly as a character now that that whole "cracks" arc has played out... but I'm not optimistic. Though I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong...

Date: 2010-12-23 05:33 am (UTC)What turned me off mostly was the nonchalant attitude she had. But at least she didn't dump her fiancee in the end. That would be too much like Rose (though she was never engaged) I hope that she will be better in Series 6.
I'm giving Amy a chance before I pass judgment. But I will say that I really enjoyed Eleven in the series.

Date: 2010-12-23 12:59 pm (UTC)I hope that now she's "back to normal" with her family and her life-as-it-should-have-been restored, she'll be a bit easier to like.
