I've been away for a couple of days and haven't had a chance to catch up with anything yet, but I've just opened up my LJ to read the incredibly sad news about the death of Lis Sladen.

I'm completely stunned.

Sarah-Jane Smith was MY companion - we all have "our" Doctors and our favourite companions, and she was, without a doubt my favourite when I was a kid and I think I probably squealed like a banshee when she returned to our screens in 2006, first of all in Doctor Who and then later with her own spin-off show.

I don't know what else to say right now - other than to express my sorrow and my sympathy for her friends and family.

Goodbye, Lis. We won't forget you.

I'm stunned as well. She was only 63.

I know. Reports are saying that she'd been fighting cancer - but whatever the truth of it, it's still too young. By all accounts, she was a lovely lady.

*sniff*

Dunno how I'm going to break the news to the kids - they love the SJA.

Wow! When did that happen. I haven't heard it on the radio news.

I have to say I always preferred Jo to Sarah Jane, as she didn't scream nearly so much. But I did like her as the best of Tom Baker's companions.

I've got News24 on and it's running on the ticker... they're talking about it now.

Oh no! That's so sad. Sarah Jane was one of my first companions back when I was a kid. :(

Same here. I vaguely remember Patrick Troughton, but Jon Pertwee was MY Doctor (until Xmas 2005!) and while I liked Liz and Jo, it was Sarah-Jane that really left an impression on me. It's so, so sad :(

I've only seen her work on New!Who. But she was a really fantastic actress bringing a really warmth to her character.

My little sister read the news over my shoulder and was devastated.

I just posted about this before seeing your post. The BBC have now issued an official statement. If anyone wants to read the article it's here

I've been away and this was the first thing I saw when I opened up LJ for the first time since I got back.

I'm so sad - and I'll have to tell my kids in the morning; they're avid fans of both shows,
