So sad at this news. He wasn't that old and anyone who can write Rodney, Delboy and Citizen Smith deserves our homage. I will never forget the wedding episode which had me rolled up with laughter one second and crying like a baby the next. Such clever writing. A great loss.
I like the way that article calls him the Dickens of our time, because it's so true. He wrote such fabulous characters and imbued them with such warmth.
The later seasons of Fools and Horses were incredible - as you say, you'd be laughing your head off at one minute and crying the next. The wedding, the birth of Damien ("it's a baby!") the episode where Cassandra has a miscarriage... to name but a few were just brilliantly written and I'm sure there aren't many other writers who could pull off something like that - if indeed there are any.
