What with it being the end of the year and all that, I thought I’d be terribly self-indulgent and make a list of the J/D fics I’ve enjoyed most this year. I’ve tried to limit myself to one or two from my favourite authors – but as I’ve said before, you can’t go wrong reading any of their stuff.
akalettucehead was as usual incredibly prolific this year, and wrote some fabulous post-eps and independent stories and it was difficult to pick just a couple. But in the end, I’m going for We Keep Killing Off the Houseplants as my favourite of hers this year. And she’s one of the few writers who can get Toby right, I think, so I’m going to add Sanity and Salads which is a post ep for Life on Mars - a conversation between Josh and Toby. But I could easily have picked about half a dozen others.
I think
bexatious' fabulous Ten Men just scrapes in as it was posted at the beginning of January 2006 – that’s one of my all time favourite fics – and I loved her Transition post ep, The Life Worth Living
cantbesilent has written some excellent fic, but I still think my favourite has to be her first one, You Think. And she’s just posted a wonderful post-Transition fic, so if you haven’t read it, GO NOW! The Heart and the Breath which has immediately made the list (!)
christinekh wrote a long and fabulous AU S6/7 fic, Coming Back to You which has Josh and Donna as a couple throughout most of S6&7 whilst (mostly) canon events unfold. (And she wrote me Donna getting to lick ice cream off Josh, and for that I will be forever in her debt!!)
You all know I’m
dianora2’s biggest fan, so again, it’s hard to pick just a couple, but I think I’ll go for her post ep to Election Day I - not just because of the smut (which is, of course, excellent) but because it just fits so perfectly with the way things went in canon. The Skin of My Emotion. Honourable mention also goes to her two post-Transition fics Scenes From a Vacation We’ll Never See and Sex Scenes from a Vacation We’ll Never See.
In Silence by
emrie is another excellent post ED1 fic which really captures the awkwardness and uncertainty between the characters.
The Pennies and Gold Exhange by
imperviousness was fun and sweet and also,
mindness wrote a pair of excellent ‘Hawaii’ fics – The Staying Thing and The Thing About Staying
quaggy_mire’s Expecting was just wonderful – a completely different take on Josh, Donna and their kids that hasn’t been bettered. Could Have Been is also a favourite of mine.
It was another hard choice to pick just a couple of
salr323's fics because all her stuff’s so good, but I’d definitely single out her ‘vacation’ fic - A Truly Excellent Notion and her post ep for ED2, What Dreams May Come.
From Speranza- The Age of Aquarius and Epihpany
Over at TNL, there's Chai’s Patriot Acts . It’s angsty, dark and political, but well written and a good read.
Jen Wilson’s For the Most Part is quite possibly the best thing she’s ever written – the Lyman marriage through the years. Bit of a tear-jerker so have the Kleenex to hand!
And finally, reminding us that crack!fic is alive and well, the superb Republicans End the World Accidentally by

There are bound to be some I’ve forgotten, and you’ve probably already read most or all of these, but I hope there are some here that you might not have read in a while and will like to re-visit! Feel free to prod me if you think I've missed out something I shouldn't have!
Oh, and I was trying to get a list of new fic recs together for before Christmas, but real life and porn-writing intervened. So I’ll try to get it ready over the next few days, just in case any of you want some decent stuff to read to get through that period of post-festive blues!

Date: 2006-12-30 03:44 am (UTC)I'm glad there are some things new to you here, and like I said, I'm getting a list of more recent fics together as well, which I hope to post in the next few days. Have fun!

Date: 2006-12-30 02:51 am (UTC)I'll be spending some time coming up rereading some of these delicious fics. :)

Date: 2006-12-30 03:45 am (UTC)and these too...
Date: 2006-12-30 03:36 am (UTC)But, if I may be so bold, I will see your recs and raise you several>>>
from coffeeplease (akalettucehead) my favs from this year are "The Room" and "Raw Tuna and Throwing Sandwiches" (both of these are set in the future and I just like the tone of them)
from Sally, The Road Less Travelled. I'm not usually big on AU stuff, but this is so close to what coulda been...and I like Donna's take on why she had to leave Josh the way she did after Gaza.
from Liza C., "the Romance of Poker" It just cracked me up.
from Louisa Lorin, "Intoxication" which totally captures that sitting-on-the-couch-omg-is-he-gonna-kiss-me anticipation.
from cantbesilent, "After Midnight"
from dianora, "For this Moment" for what happened after the door closed in our faces during "Transition"
from Speranza, "A Van, a plane, a car and a bus" (I'm not sure if this was actually written this year; I apologize if not, but I still like it!)
from YOU, the Evolution trilogy. Beautiful character voices and scenes that I wish we had seen.
and, even though I know you said it, extra props for Chai's "Patriot Games" which totally kicked my ass, made me cry, and yet I still have re-read it over and over.
Just my 2 cents, thanks for the platform!
Re: and these too...
Date: 2006-12-30 03:42 am (UTC)All of the ones you've mentioned are linked in my posts somewhere...
(and thanks for thinking of mine, that's very sweet!)

Date: 2010-09-04 08:37 pm (UTC)It's so long since I read any WW fic myself, maybe I should get back into the habit. I've got a more-than-half-iinished one sitting on my HD from about 2 years ago that I keep saying I should open up and complete. One of these days...
I know that some authors' websites have disappeared since I did these lists, and I'm afraid I haven't had time to check and update, but if you come across any that have gone or moved, let me know.

Date: 2010-09-04 08:43 pm (UTC)I've seriously forgotten a lot of these stories. Whenever I'm in the mood for J/D fic I always end up going back to a few old faithfuls, most of which are from the early years, so for all of these ones I've probably only read them once, and that would have been 4 years ago (and let's just take a moment here to reflect on that. 4 years. Wow.).
OMG i've just noticed your Facebook/Twitter check boxes aren't just un-checkable, they're actually GONE. How did you do this??

Date: 2010-09-04 09:10 pm (UTC)As for the ticky boxes - someone on my flist posted a link to a fix earlier in the week. I can't find the link, but here's the fix which you need to put into the CSS. It doesn't seem to matter where you put it.
