Generally and Specifically - Who
Apr. 12th, 2010 06:41 pmYou can tell it's still the school holidays, because I have time to write stuff like this!
Prompted by some comments and discussions I’ve been having here over the last couple of days, and by the number of reaction posts I’ve seen that are bemoaning the direction that DW is now taking (after only two episodes!), I had a few thoughts that I wanted to jot down as a result.
I try to be very careful about what I say here, because I know that fandom can be a dangerous place at times. It’s why I tend to steer fairly clear most of the time and am posting stuff like this at my own LJ rather than at one of the comms. I hope people will pick up on it and read it anyway, but that anyone who comments will respect the fact that this is MY journal and as such contains my opinions. I hope I never present anything I put here as anything other than my own opinion, and I’m perfectly happy for people to put points of view that don’t agree with mine and to have a friendly discussion with them.
Here, then, are a bunch of thinky-thoughts about the show in general and one particular thing that is annoying me.
( you can please some of the people some of the time… )
( and now to the specifics )
So there ya go. Feel free to agree or disagree with me - I don't mind either way as long as we can all play nice!

Through Rose-tinted spectacles...
Apr. 2nd, 2010 05:20 pmI know we're on the eve of the new era of Who, but although I've finished doing my S2-4 DW rewatch picspams and thinky-thoughts posts (for now), my brain is still all DW meta-y. This has been helped along by the arrival of my copy of Chicks Dig Time Lords, in which there is an excellent essay on why Rose worked better with Nine than with Ten.

I think this is going to be the last of these picspams – for a while at least. I’ve done almost all of S2, S3 and S4 (I missed The Christmas Invasion and New Earth - well, not missed exactly, just decided to start doing the spams after those episodes had aired) and I’ve already posted some of my thoughts about the specials here. Although I might have to picspam The Next Doctor at some point, because there is a lot of pretty in that! :-) But I’m not going to be able to get through all five specials before S5 starts on Saturday, and I’d planned to finish these before the new series starts, so…
On to the S4 two-part finale. Meta and Tennant pretty, because I can’t help myself. *g*
Oh - and this is a really long one.
( And for one moment... one shining moment... she was the most important woman in the whole wide universe. )

DW Rewatch - 4x11, Turn Left
Mar. 25th, 2010 10:50 pmTurn Left is another stonking episode with an absolutely stunning central performance from Catherine Tate. I said when I started recapping S4 that I thought that one of the reasons that this series is so strong overall is because of her; partly because I think Rusty wanted to make sure that she was given things to do that would show people that thought she was ‘just a comedienne’ and 'not the right choice' a smack round the face.
Well. Blimey.
( It was the most ordinary day in the world, but by turning right, you never met the Doctor and the whole world just changed around you. )

DW Rewatch - 4x10, Midnight
Mar. 21st, 2010 10:50 pmThe first time I watched Midnight I was bloody impressed. I’ve seen it twice since then, I think – once a few weeks ago on DVD, and then on this rewatch, and each time, I’ve been more and more taken with it.

( There's no life in this entire system, there couldn't be. )

I’ve found it quite hard to get into this next run of picspams. Not because I don’t like the episodes, but probably because I know what’s coming and that it’s going to hurt :-(
( Count the shadows. For God's sake, remember... if you want to live, count the shadows )
Image and rambling heavy!
