"Crackpots" was just on TV... (aka the episode that spawned a thousand(?) Josh-fangirls...)

TOBY
It's 'Throw Open Our Office Doors To People Who Want To Discuss Things That We Could Care Less About... Day'

MANDY
Well, that sounds goofy, doesn't it?

care less

SAM
It's not so bad. You talk to them for a minute. You give them a souvenir pen with the Presidential seal on it.

MANDY
This isn't a waste of time?

MARGARET
Oh, it's definitely a waste of time, but it's one of Leo's pet office policies.

MANDY
Why?

LEO
[walks in] Good morning.

TOBY
[whispers to Mandy] Sadly you're about to find out.

LEO
Andrew Jackson, in the main foyer of his White House had a big block of cheese.

TOBY
Hmmm.

LEO
I am making a mental list of those who are snickering, and even as I speak I'm preparing appropriate retribution. The block of cheese was huge--over
two tons. And it was there for any and all who might be hungry.

TOBY
Leo, wouldn't this time be better spent plotting a war against a country that can't possibly defend itself against us? *snort!*

LEO
We can do that later, Toby. Right now I'm talking about President Andrew Jackson.

SAM
Actually, right now, you're talking about a big block of cheese.

LEO
And Sam goes on my list!

SAM
What about Toby?

LEO
I'm unpredictable. Jackson wanted the White House to belong to the people, so from time to time, he opened his doors to those who wished an audience.

MANDY
And then he locked the doors behind them and made them eat two tons of cheese. (Much as I disliked Mandy, that was a well-delivered line!)

LEO
It is in that spirit...

SAM
Hang on. Mandy doesn't go on the list?

LEO
Mandy's new.

SAM
So it's just me... on the list?

and
scolding
BARTLET
Is it time for my 10 o'clock scolding?
(love it!)

and then later, CJ, Pluie and the completely sense-of-humour-less people she's meeting with...

MAN 1
We think you'll admit it was a pretty impressive performance for Pluie especially when you consider the impediments of modern life she had to conquer:
highways, housing, forest denuded of trees.

WOMAN
Not to mention the US-Canadian border.

C.J.
Sure, 'cause no photo I.D.

Pluie

WOMAN
I'm sorry?

C.J.
That was a joke.

MAN 1
Why does Pluie make the trek? Because wolves have to breed with many packs in order to keep from becoming extinct.

C.J.
Really?

MAN 1
If they breed among themselves, they'll eventually produce offspring that's genetically weaker, thus endangering their long-term survival.

C.J.
That helps explain Buckingham Palace.

(BWAHAHAHA!)

But it's not possible to mention this episode without:

JOSH
I serve at the pleasure of the President, and it's a great privilege that I will never forget. I can't keep this. I think it's a white flag of surrender. I want to be a comfort to my friends in tragedy. And I want to be able to celebrate with them in triumph. And for all the
times in between, I just want to be able to look them in the eye. Leo, it's not for me. I want to be with my friends, my family, and these women.

the guys

*sigh*. He really is very sweet sometimes...

and, you know... hot

Josh

If you thought I was gonna leave THAT shot out, then you don't know me very well!

Good times...

I admit, I was a little shocked when you started the quotage with Toby/Mandy... silly me!

I was just messin' witcha! heh.

It's from The US Poet Laureate (3x16) - the (in)famous "lemonlyman" episode! - It's from a batch by [livejournal.com profile] somanyreasons here (http://somanyreasons.livejournal.com/5664.html)

I just saw it for the first time last night. Seriously. I joined TWW late and just bought the DVDs in May. Then I went away for three months, and finally got back and had a chance to get started on season 1. Good stuff.

You've got some treats in store!! I've been watching since it started (which was 2000 here in the UK) and loved it all, but S1 and S2 are really something special. Enjoy!

oh, funkymunky you are so lucky you still have so much good stuff to see. What HAVE you seen? Season 2 is my favorite. My dad stole my Season 2 DVDs and I tried to get them back last night and when I gave up I said "well, I guess I don't need them right away. I have seen all of them 5 times already" then I realized that was ridiculous. I have definitely seen them more than 5 times. Proabably 10-20 depending on the episode. Do I have problem? Am I in denial? I know, random story in middle of caz's crackpots thread. All the "on the list" stuff cracks me up but I always cringe when Josh tries to talk to Sam about the card. I think my favorite scene is the Josh/Zoe/Charlie scene.

Hee. I love this episode, and all of the Big Block of Cheese Day ones. Sam's incredulous 'WHY ME?' attitude just makes me giggle, and Josh is being too sweet for words.

Also, I can't remember who said this and I only noticed it after I was told it was there, but in the music over Bartlet's final speech, there's a few snatches of 'Ave Maria'. That is my absolute favorite bit, and I can't really find the reason why.

It's the music that makes it art.

Oh yes, the music choices were always very clever... I was just talking about this with someone actually, and muck kudos to Snuffy (as a musician myself, I notice these things!!) And I have to confess, I try to listen to the music rather than that speech... it's a bit OTT for me!

I agree about the final speech. Not my favorite. This is a weird episode in that there are some really great moments but then some I really don't like. I can't say they are bad, but they make me feel uncomfortable. But then I think maybe they are supposed to make me feel uncomfortable. I always wondered if this episode would have made me fall in love with Josh if I'd seen it first (missed first season and probably didn't see it til Bravo reruns).

That speech is the only bit that makes me squirm... but then that might be because I'm British and we tend to laugh at stuff like that! I don't know whether I'd have fallen in love with Josh in this ep either, because I was already there! Such a dedicated fangirl!

I adore Crackpots. It really is one of my favourite TWW episodes. And S1 was actually the last season I watched, so I was already a Josh fangirl by then, but if not...that episode would totally have converted me. My favourite bit is with Ave Maria. It never fails to make me cry.

Yeah, so many funny moments and there is no such thing as too much sweet!Josh. I saw TWW in order from the pilot on, and was a goner from, um... the pilot really! It was the funny that really got me - I've always gone for the guys with a sense of humour. But then when I noticed... everything else, that didn't hurt either!

I was watching it last night too with my husband going "why are you watching this now when you have it on DVD?" He doesn't quite understand the fannish imperative *g*. At the end I said "that's such a great episode" and he said "they are all great episodes" so maybe he's more of a fan than I thought he was.

Having said all that I agree that the speech at the end is a bit OTT, but I love everything else and Josh breaks my heart.

Date: 2006-09-04 03:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] caz963.livejournal.com
Absolutely! I mean if it's on TV then why not watch? And scantily clad Josh is a must see at any time!
The speech at the end is one of those "David Brent" moments - the ones you cringe at from behind your fingers... and there have been a few of those over the years, but I can forgive it because the rest of it's so great!

Isn't this the one where Leo says something like
"I'm sure Margaret spent alot of time assigning these to the appropriate people"

Margarets standing behind him shaking her head then just as he turns around she starts nodding.

I love the timing, so funny.
