I might have been looking forward to this one. Just a bit. Because... today on the 30 Days of TV meme - my favourite male character.

I don't have to post anything else, do I? You all know where I'm going to go. And that I can't name just one -

A little while ago, I pointed out that I may be in a bit of a rut when it comes to my fangirling choices. I go for the smart, funny guys with nice eyes and a winning smile, who - while they may not merit that stupid label "conventionally handsome" - are nonetheless gorgeous and incredibly sexy. Being brilliant, clueless about women and somewhat fucked-up seem to go hand-in-hand with the pretty - and having a nice arse doesn't hurt either!

But back to the characters.

Exhibit A.

Joshua Lyman. Lost his sister in a fire when he was a kid, and his father on the night of what should have been his (as Toby would have called it) 'day of jubilee'. As a result, he has a fear of abandonment, which results in the fact that he "doesn't leave people" and has a desperate need to fix everything he can - and things he can't. Despite the mouth full of wiseass and a sometimes world-weary cynicism, he's both an idealist and a pragmatist - a very fine line to tread, but he manages it with aplomb nonetheless. Took him best part of a decade to realise and admit that the love of his life was under his nose :-)

Exhibit B.

The Tenth Doctor. I know - strictly speaking - the character is "The Doctor" (as in all of them!) but given that each of them has their own individual traits and characteristics, I feel justified in picking just the one. Ten quickly became my Doctor for many reasons - not just the obvious one (see above!). I love his boundless energy, his amazing zest for life, his inquisitiveness, his intellect, his humour... and the tormented soul that he hides underneath it all. He can be a ruthless bastard, but will always give his enemies a choice, usually "stop it - or I'll have to stop you". Stupid enemies usually thought he was making empty threats - until he (metaphorically) kicked the crap out of them.

Tragically, he had to give up travelling with his soul-mate and best friend in order to save her life - and became even more fucked-up as a result.

Tomorrow - my favourite female character.

There's nothing wrong with the obvious. *sits and stares*

Well, no, I didn't think there was. *g*

It's just that I'm supposed to be discussing the characters rather than the physical attributes of the actor playing them. /serious

*goes back to drooling*

Hi, hope you don't mind me posting. I've always kept an eye on your journal since I discovered all your fabulous West Wing stuff!

I just wanted to say, I agree completely with the type of male character you're drawn to. For me, I can accept a completely vacuous pretty-boy character, who gets the girl easily etc, as good-looking but I would never swoon over them the way I would a complex character with real depth, emotions and motivations.

I'm attracted to someone I can root for. Of course, looking like these two definitely helps, and I do struggle to understand those who can't see it, but I guess with both of them you really have to see them in action to gain full appreciation!

I absolutely don't mind - feel free to drop by anytime!

I've said many times that while I can certainly see and appreciate the more obviously 'conventionally handsome' types (and that's such a dumb expression, really!) it takes a bit more than a pretty face to really do it for me. I'm enjoying White Collar, for example, and Matt Bomer is gorgeous, but he's no David or Brad, at least not for me.

And I totally get the thing about needing to see them in action :)

I certainly can't argue with these choices! And not just for shallow reasons. There are a lot of attractive actors out there but very few CHARACTERS that get my interest to the extent that Ten does.

You mention White Collar and I agree Matt = very pretty. But like you I don't think about him once I've shut off the tv. And I have to admit that I didn't think that David Tennant was especially attractive (not ugly by any means but not stop and stare either) until I fell for his Doctor.

Yep - you're absolutely right about needing that bit more than the pretty face to really grab me.

It was Casanova that did it for me with David (I hadn't seen Blackpool at that point) - and even then it wasn't his looks especially, it was that whole "cheeky-chappie" thing he had going on. I loved the way the character was written; he could so easily have been a real sleaze-bag who used women, but he wasn't - what came across was a man who geniunely liked women. Yes, he liked having sex with them, but he liked them for who they were as well - and that's a very rare thing which completely sold it for me. And of course, he was ultimately unlucky in love and damaged and flawed and all of that as well. But it was his wit, his sense of humour and that grin and his amazing zest for life that really hooked me.

And then I noticed the legs that go all the way up to 'there'.

In the boots.

Guh.

Like you though, I think it took Ten to make me fall completely head-over-heels.
